United For Black History Month And All Year Long
By UWM Careers
Recognizing the culture and history of the Black community makes our workplace at UWM stronger. Check out how we celebrate Black History Month and dive into everything United Black does to support Black culture and leadership.

Black History Month is an opportunity in February to honor the achievements of the Black community and embrace the culture that inspires us all year long. At UWM, we strive to acknowledge each team member’s background and journey and provide community resources to help them feel comfortable and heard. Read some of the ways we’re celebrating this holiday and our team members.

Celebrating Black History Month at UWM

Black History Month highlights the strength, creativity and impact of Black people who have shaped our world. At UWM, one way team members can learn about the achievements of remarkable people is by walking across the bridge and reading the informational banners that line the path. By highlighting their stories, we grow our understanding of their contribution and how they impact our lives and the people around us.

UWM also hosts interactive events like Jenga Trivia and a Black History Month Panel, which provide a dynamic mix of activities to come together and learn interesting facts about Black culture and its history. The game encourages team members to learn more about relevant topics and reflect, while the panel offers an opportunity for team members to ask questions and create an inclusive dialogue.

In addition to reflecting on the past, UWM celebrates Black culture by embracing opportunities to lift each other up to foster pride and belonging in the workplace. One way UWM does this is by hosting a variety of pop-up shops on campus featuring local Black-owned businesses to showcase their incredible talent. “These events act as a platform for Black entrepreneurs to grow and connect with a wider audience,” noted one participant, DeSheria H. of Madison & Grayce Candles.

Likewise, the United Black Leadership Summit embodies this spirit by connecting team members with inspiring leaders at UWM. It’s a networking opportunity all team members can join to learn about current leaders’ career paths and stories that demonstrate success is attainable.

UWM’s Team Member Resource Groups (TMRG) are another one of our vital networks supporting team members and advocating for DEI. Founded by Aaron Sims, our Diversity and Inclusion Coach, the United Black TMRG is dedicated to developing, cultivating and supporting Black culture and leadership.

Throughout the year, United Black offers a variety of initiatives and programs to grow and empower team members of our Black community. One key opportunity is the Mock Blitz Interview, a chance to take part in trial job interviews with immediate feedback from leaders. This provides practical training and helps team members prepare for career advancement within the company. Additionally, the Book Club is a fan favorite that opens up room for discussion. It serves as a space to share and explore relevant topics and authors that cultivate an appreciation for Black culture. United Black also organizes events to spread awareness and unite people. Whether it’s a Juneteenth celebration, marching together at the Freedom Walk or bringing the community together through cookouts, something is always going on.

Another way the group stays connected is through a collaborative online space where they share fun anecdotes, celebrate milestones and more. Here, any member can spotlight their own small business or a Black-owned business they support. This increases visibility and spreads awareness while also strengthening the sense of community United Black stands for.

At UWM, our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is part of our workplace culture year-round. Supporting Black culture is an example of how we support our team members as part of our work community. Join us to feel connected!
