In this article, we’ll explore

  • What working at UWM looks like across teams
  • How team members grow and find opportunity
  • What makes the UWM work culture unique

Everyone’s Journey Starts Somewhere

Starting your first job — or stepping into a completely new industry — can feel uncertain. There’s a mix of nerves, curiosity and the rush of something exciting just beginning. At UWM, we understand that everyone starts from a different place, and that’s why we’re committed to meeting you exactly where you are. Through real stories and advice from some of our team members, you’ll learn what it’s like to work here — and how our culture of learning, opportunity and genuine connections can help you thrive at UWM.

First Impressions & Surprises

At UWM, everyone begins in the same place — New Hire Experience. This week-long program jump starts your success by introducing campus life, company expectations and essential mortgage training. After completion, team members transition into role-specific training which may include classroom instruction, hands-on learning or mentorship from seasoned teammates.

Brittany M., an Underwriter II who joined UWM in 2023, shared, “During my first few weeks on the job, I immediately noticed the professionalism in the air — everyone is a genius in their own way. I feel at home here.” For many new team members, this combination of expertise and genuine connection is the first sign that they’re in the right place. From there, the real journey begins — daily routines, team interactions and growth opportunities that shape every UWM employee.

To illustrate what that looks like in action, Jacob M., who joined UWM in 2021, describes, “As an Account Executive, I wear many hats: I am a project manager, marketer and — very necessary in our industry — a strong problem-solver.”

Jacob’s experience highlights something core to the UWM work environment: once you’re in your role, the pace picks up quickly. And with that fast pace comes something he didn’t expect — the sheer intensity of the energy. He explains, “Between daily morning huddles, sales meetings every Wednesday and various trainings scheduled throughout the week, the pace never drops.”

With that kind of momentum, priorities can shift quickly and new opportunities can surface at any moment. The ability to pivot confidently becomes one of the most valuable skills you can develop working at UWM — and it’s a big part of what helps team members thrive.

Growth, Pace & Learning Curve

As team members grow within UWM, they often find themselves stepping into new responsibilities, discovering strengths and adapting to different challenges. Ciara L., Operations Specialist III, shares this growth firsthand: “During my six years with the company, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work across five different teams in Operations. Each transition presented new challenges that strengthened my professional capabilities and enhanced my effectiveness.”

Her experiences have shaped not only her knowledge, but also the way she approaches every new challenge. As Ciara explains, “Through these experiences I’ve developed strong adaptability, rapid learning skills, flexibility and resilience, all of which continue to shape my performance and impact in my role.”

Support, Resources & Team Dynamics

At UWM, team members never have to navigate challenges alone. With guidance from team leaders, access to on-site training, and constant collaboration with peers, support is always within reach. Nic G., VP of Sales, explains, “If it wasn’t for my team members investing in me and giving me the support and opportunity to change my life, I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am today. I came into this industry with no mortgage knowledge and little to my name and during that time my teammates were the ones who stepped in making sure I had what I needed to get to work, stay on my feet and keep moving forward.”

Now in a position to lead and develop others, Nic carries those early experiences forward. He often asks himself, “How do I make someone feel welcomed and show them that they have the capability and potential to change their lives? How do I make life a little easier within these four walls? If UWM can be a place where people not only enjoy being but are also working toward something that changes the trajectory of their life — that’s my goal.”

Nic’s story is a powerful reflection of what support and the team dynamic at UWM truly look like — not just resources, but people supporting people and creating an environment where everyone has the chance to grow.

Advice for Future New Hires

Just as the support system at UWM plays a defining role in each team member’s journey, the wisdom gained along the way becomes something they’re eager to pass forward. For leaders who have grown through grit, vulnerability and the help of those around them, offering advice to new hires isn’t just guidance — it’s a continuation of the cycle of support that shaped them.

Nic notes, “My experience here taught me that I previously lived my life full of fear, and UWM helped me realize that fear is make-believe. When you start to peel back the layers, it’s not real or tangible.” He also shares that success becomes clearer when your purpose outweighs your worries. “Having a purpose bigger than a paycheck matters. Don’t be afraid — you have nothing to lose but time. Fear is this selflimiting belief.”

Cory M., VP of IT Product Development, adds the importance of authenticity, communication and collective growth. “It’s okay to fail or have issues — communication is key and critical here at UWM to ensure success across the board.” He emphasizes that leadership isn’t about hierarchy, but contribution: “I learned that being a leader isn’t a title, it’s being a catalyst. Being able to get into the weeds and learn with everyone around you. Share what you learn and everyone will grow, and we will get better together.”
