At United Wholesale Mortgage (UWM), inclusion is much more than a word. It’s a promise to provide a work environment where every team member feels essential and supported.
One inspiring example of UWM’s commitment is Leo P., a dedicated member of the Mail Services team. Leo, who lives with a disability, has shown remarkable perseverance and dedication, making his journey a testament to the impact of support and the inclusive culture we strive hard to uphold.
Leo first learned about UWM through his father, a team member in IT. With the encouragement of his father and the UWM Talent team, Leo was given an opportunity on the Building Services team. Despite challenges, Leo completed the process and began his career at UWM.
After some time, Leo's leaders recognized his potential and exposed him to different roles within Building Services, ultimately leading him to the Mail Room, where he found his perfect fit.
“Having the ability to try different roles gave me an opportunity to identify where my talents could be best used,” Leo shared.
Today, Leo plays a key role in timely and accurate delivery of internal communications and packages across campus. His attention to detail and commitment to service make a daily impact, proving that when people are supported and empowered, they thrive.
Leo’s impact doesn’t stop there. His influence extends into the broader community, where his resilience and advocacy continue to inspire. He was recently honored with the Ted Lindsay Foundation Courage Award, which celebrates individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder who exemplify exceptional courage and perseverance. This recognition reflects not only Leo’s personal journey, but also the inclusive spirit that defines UWM.
Nominated by FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation, Leo’s journey to receiving this award was a collaborative effort. FAR’s president reached out to Leo’s father for additional insight, and together they felt it would be meaningful to include an endorsement from Leo’s team leader, Marsha.
“Between the endorsement from FAR and the support from UWM, I was selected as one of the 2025 recipients,” Leo shares. “I hope to bring awareness that individuals on the autism spectrum are just as capable as any other human being.”
Leo is also an active member and advocate of United Abilities, one of UWM’s Team Member Resource Groups (TMRGs). With over 300 members and growing, United Abilities supports team members with disabilities and those who want to learn, develop and foster a safe, inclusive environment.
“Being part of United Abilities has given me the platform to not just share my story, but also to listen and learn from others,” says Leo. “It’s a community where every voice matters, and that’s incredibly empowering.”
What makes UWM's approach to inclusion unique is the recognition that diversity isn't about numbers but about creating genuine connections and opportunities for every team member.
Kim B., a founding member of United Abilities and part of the Legal team, shared that the group has always emphasized solidarity. She noted that UWM’s inclusive environment helps employees with disabilities feel connected and supported as part of the broader workplace community.
Sam T., also a member of United Abilities, values how the group uplifts individuals and amplifies their voices. “As a person who has had to be creative throughout their life to accomplish things, I enjoy developing relationships with others in similar environments.”
These stories aren’t just examples of inclusion; they’re proof of what’s possible when people are allowed to be themselves and support what matters to them. That’s why you belong here, too.
Your background, your abilities and your unique perspective aren’t just accepted at UWM — they’re celebrated. Whether you're joining a TMRG or simply supporting your teammates, you're contributing to something greater: a culture built on respect, connection and opportunity. We’re ready when you are.
