Career Coaching at UWM: How Positive Feedback Opens Doors

By UWM Careers

May 12, 2026

In this article, we’ll explore

  • How career coaching at UWM turns positive feedback into growth
  • Coaching differs from managing and mentoring by focusing on reflection and individual goals
  • Training and career coaching work together to help team members build long-term careers at UWM

How Does UWM Support Career Growth?

UWM offers access to career coaching, experienced leaders and educational resources that act as a trusted career-advisor network to guide meaningful learning and help you reach your potential.

Every career path comes with a learning curve. Whether you’re stepping into your first role or transitioning into something completely new, there’s always a period of figuring things out — learning processes, asking questions and building confidence along the way.

At UWM, that learning phase isn’t something you navigate alone. No matter how your role or team evolves, there are always people and tools around you who are ready to help — from team leaders and teammates to trainers and AI-powered resources like ChatUWM — all working together to guide you through the day-to-day.

There’s no expectation to have everything figured out right away. It’s all part of UWM’s commitment to continuous improvement — a core pillar focused on ongoing learning, personal and professional growth.

What Learning Opportunities Are Available at UWM?

Because every career path is different, UWM doesn’t follow a single formula when it comes to development. Team members have access to virtual and in-person courses, certifications, specialized training and hands on learning experiences that build both foundational knowledge and advanced skills.

Learning resources and leadership opportunities at UWM:

  • Open Door Policy – encouraging open, ongoing communication with leaders at any time
  • Academy – an internal learning platform with training resources, job aids and ongoing content to help you continuously learn about all areas of the business
  • YourTime – monthly conversations with your leader focused on performance, feedback and development
  • Elevate Mentorship Program – pairing team members with mentors for career guidance, personal support and perspective
  • Emerge – an eight-week leadership and professional development program focused on foundational skills and best practices

While each role and team operates differently, many team members can expect their first 90 days to focus on learning the fundamentals, building familiarity with systems and processes, and gaining confidence in their day-to-day work.

For example, on the Operations team, new members begin with hands-on training led by an Operations Trainer, then transition into peer mentoring within their team. As confidence builds, the process becomes more collaborative — with experienced team members stepping back to observe, while the new team member takes the lead, ensuring procedures are understood and applied correctly.

How is Coaching Different from Management or Mentoring?

Career coaching plays a distinct role — especially early in a career — and differs from traditional management or mentoring.

  • Management – focuses on responsibilities, performance and day‑to‑day execution
  • Mentoring – often draws on experience and advice
  • Coaching – centers on conversation, reflection and helping individuals define their own goals and next steps

Career growth at UWM happens through consistent coaching conversations that support better decisions over time. At UWM, development happens through dialogue, not directives. Coaching is embedded into everyday work — not limited to performance reviews. This creates regular opportunities for feedback, questions, and honest discussion. This approach helps team members feel supported as they explore new skills, strengthen existing ones and consider what comes next.

How Does Feedback Turn Opportunity into Growth?

AVP of Sales Training Leader Maddie shared, “My leaders saw my potential before I did. Their feedback and support helped me grow into a confident version of myself.” Through thoughtful coaching and encouragement, Maddie gained the confidence to take on greater responsibility, expand her perspective and continue progressing into leadership.

Kyle’s experience highlights a similar turning point of early support. After joining UWM from the restaurant industry, coaching helped him feel valued and confident in his next steps, eventually becoming AVP, Underwriting Division Leader. “From day one, I felt supported, empowered and like my voice mattered,” Kyle shared. “My leaders and peers genuinely cared about my growth, both personally and professionally.”

Together, stories like Maddie’s and Kyle’s show how for 40 years, conversations like this have helped turn opportunity into expertise and new roles into long term careers.
